74 Trans am front seat belt retractor

How is the retractor mounted? My seat belts need repair or replacement. Its currently mounted over the carpet with the bracket exposed. I'm not sure if this is correct.

It appears that the carpet needs to be cut and the bracket goes under it.

Next question: The roof mounted retractor is bad and I need another. Does anyone know what cars are suitable donors? The seat belt will be re webbed an I need to include a working retractor to the rebuilder.

It doesn't answer your question, but glad to hear you are giving attention to proper seat belts. After a bad wreck in 2011, I made a point to install 3 point retractors in my old cars.

It mounts over the carpet with the flat metal bar exposed. I know this doesn't seem right. Just went through this on my car. The bar has a greenish color to it that must help keep it from rusting. I got my reference from a friends 74 SD car that has the original carpet still installed. I have a few pics of his carpet but none of the retractor. PM me if you need a pic of the retractor installed.

Thanks for that. I only found pics of Camaros and those seemed to need the carpet cut. I guess mine was installed correctly.
Now, I just need to solve the upper retractor issue.

Twister - did you ever come up with a replacement retractor or get yours repaired? I have one that is fully extended and will not retract.

I bought a retractor from a parted out car and am going to send it with the seatbelt to a shop for repair. I dont think these age well. i had to find 3 before i got one Im comfortable to use.
