Ok - I'll start.

a. "only the fourth vehicle to roll off the assembly line at the Pontiac" - not sure how one can even begin to spin that line. For the '64 model year VINs started at 1001, so the fourth vehicle off the line would be closer to xxxP1004. With this vehicle's VIN of 824P8954 it's not even close.

Perhaps the author misspoke, and meant the 4th GTO off the line? Not sure how one comes up with that, either, since GTOs were not built or VINned one right after the other. You'd have to go through every invoice, one by one at PHS (ala Fred Simmonds) to make that determination. Maybe Jim Mattison did that on behalf of an earlier owner, as he does occasionally add notes to the cover letter as warranted.

b. We have the VIN and build sheet for the purported first GTO, as presented by John Sawruk. That car was built September 11, 1963 and the VIN is P3147. Am I to believe that there were only 4 GTOs built between 3147 and 8954? Seems like a pretty big gap.

I'd love to see the cowl tag but could not find any additional pictures at this Saratoga Motorcar auction site.

So - anybody here have a '64 GTO earlier than VIN 8954?

4th Tempest 2-door post built as a GTO, perhaps? Just speculating, here.

My August 1982 '82 Firebird was a one of one at the end of the line (I had to wait for it). Perhaps this was something similar (color combo, option mix, body style). I agree though that without PHS documents to back up the claim, it's all just word salad (but still a pretty car).

I tried to zoom on the cowl tag but couldn't read it. The article says that it was built in September 1963. Since that was so early in production, it could have been that not many were being built so early. It may have taken some time to get traction to ultimately get the production to the 32K for 1964. We remember that the initial expectation was that Pontiac would only sell 5,000 GTOs in 1964.

Does anyone know what it sold for? I couldn’t find it on the Saratoga auction site.

Some guys bought into the story it seems.
For sure a first month car , and very nice.

It's got the Hurst Floor Shifter and 6.4 liter engine, so it's pretty special alright.
