Broken captured body mount bolts
 

So working on the 65 GTO and the 64 Impala this weekend, One Impala broken caged nut 4 on the GTO!
The GTO hase both side the same bolts-behind the front wheel and behind the rear axle.
Best place to access these-through floor board? Any pictures would be great.

Skip, I've rebuilt the rear mounts on GM A body daily drivers that had rust problems back in the 70s and I always cut 3 slits in the trunk floor in a square pattern and used the 4th side as a hinge to bend the floor up so I was able to put in a fabricated cage nut in the channel portion below the trunk floor. I just bent the metal back down and welded up the 3 cut sides.

It worked for me, and you can grind it and make it look pretty if you need to have it looks like it never happened, hope this helps............;)

Thanks guys. I guess just ball parking the floor and trunk where those "should be" and cut a good square. Weird the same ones both sides.
The Impala one has it's own "tower" in the wheel well so easier to know where the window needs to be. That tower had about 2 cups of sand in it!.

Dropped a can of race gas at the shop and saw the "bump" right over the front one. Forgot trunk key to look back there.

Looked again and the rear bolts I can not tell where the captured nut is. They are behind the rear wheel right where the wheel well and trunk join. Can't see a spot in the trunk to open up.

Thanks guys. I thought they were in the vicinity. Trunk floor is getting replaced too, maybe what those are not coming out.

So glad we restored our cars long ago enough and that we started with clean cars so all those bolts just screwed right out. I do not envy you guys having to cut things open to get at these nuts.

This one has a leaky rear window so trunk is rusty, as well as some weird small rust holes right in front of tail light housing in the quarter. Maybe tail light gasket.. Not sure why the front ones got that way.

Well I messed up. The front ones are actually the inner firewall ones hidden behind fender wells. Inner firewall you can see and has a visible caged nut, not sure if the outer one has a caged nut or a regular nut like my Impala.

Of course I had cut the floor beside the seat out like pictured above where I thought it was! And cut the cage too before I saw it was fine!

Anyone got a picture of the firewall mounts with no fenderwells?

This is a 65 Chevelle, but pretty much the same in that area.

That Chevelle is a little different. I'll try to get pics tomorrow. Skip Fix, what are you wanting to see?

Ii is the "outboard" firewall bolt(closer to the rocker area) a captured nut like the inner one( closer to the trans tunnel)? or a nut you put a wrench on? My impala has a nut you use a wrench on on the single firewall mount. Body mount #2 in the GTO restoration book.

Weird too how many more mounts the GTO has than the Impala. Impala going on a rotisserie soon

Interesting "halo" around the Chevelle in the first picture. 69 mach 1 in the background? High school best friend's brother had one- a slightly bluish/white 390 4 speed! Man those center 2 spark plugs were a pain to change!!
