Transmission stands/carts
 

I'm soon going to be pulling the engine and trans from my '56 Safari. The engine is a '57, mostly torn down (might be frozen; it's been sitting with the heads off for an unknown number of years). The Hydra-Matic is (I think) a '60. IAC, I'll want to put these things on cradles with wheels. The trans is coming out first, then we'll lift the engine (well, that's the plan right now, at least).

What are you guys using to hold/move these transmissions around? I'm likely going to order a pair of James' engine cradles (for this engine and hopefully, to transport a correct '56 316).

I have my spare T400 sitting on a piece of doubled up cardboard. Very easy to slide around

Thanks. Indeed, that worked for the 4-speed from my '63 donor car, but I'm looking for something a little more mobile and easier to maneuver in the garage. I guess it may well be that my best option is just a properly sized metal cart (and I'm probably over-thinking all of this, which is a side-effect of not just "going out there and doing it"). :)

Cheap moving dolly from harbor freight

For the transmission you can use four wheel movers trucks from Home Depot. The Harbor Freight one have bad casters

I make my own out of steel angle or tubing I scrounge. I've used angle from bed frames. Casters I buy wherever. I have appliances on harbor freight furniture dollies. Havent had wheel problems of course appliances are lighter than Pontiac v8s.

I have several of these. I have engines and transmissions on them, and they move super easily on concrete. They're strong as hell too

If I don't have shelf space I use an engine stand for automatics. Makes them much easier to work on.

I built my own for my spare 400 motor, using mostly scrap 2x4s and 4x4s that I had laying around. It cradles the block, with 2 big 8” steel wheels on one end. Kind of looks like a wheelbarrow!
I put the floor jack under the opposite end and easily wheel it around if I need to move it. Will see if I can’t get a picture tomorrow.
