Power Probe 3000 for finding short circuits Questions
 

Anyone out there using a Power Probe 3000 for finding short circuits? I learned of a device similar years ago when my work car had a short. Mechanic friend found short with device like this in about 10 minutes. Why I'm asking I just ordered one. We are having a short somewhere on huge o gauge train layout. Layout has 150 switches! Yes. Anyway in one track section of about 30 + feet we are having a short. Track is tubular gargraves,wooden ties. Weve ckd the main voltage line. We've ckd the electronics for the switches.weve eliminated one area at a time.one guy spent 40 hrs connecting reconnecting wires. Still shorted This started 2
weeks ago. So something has changed. We vacuumed the track. I think it's some piece of metal that has fallen beside a tie in the ballast making contact with outside rail and center rail.So I'm thinking this Power Probe would be the tool to find the short. We were going to use a volt ohm meter but I think this probe would be the quickest. Anyone have more experience? Bob

Bob why can't you use a OHM's meter?

"Short" to ground, or to power? Is it not possible to separate sections of the track to narrow down the problem section?
