I applied for Social Security on Sunday afternoon, received and email Monday morning saying it is under review, on Friday it was approved and this morning the money hit our bank account. 5 days start to finish during a Govt shutdown, unbelievable.

I am Officially RETIRED:hooray::hooray:

Congratulations to you!!! Yes, that has to be a National Record. It took me 3 months after completing the on-line application. Also, 2 phone calls and a call back that amounted to a total of 7 hours waiting on hold. But since approval, it has been smooth so far.

Took wife 2 months. Gives me an idea, should await a year.

You can thank the new Administration for that now speedy process. ;)

I worked for the railroad for 9 1/2 years and paid into RR Retirement which superceded Social Security. At the time I was paying 11% a pay period. After a series of layoffs I finally resigned and went to work for a mass transit company.

At the time you had to have ten years of RR service to become vested in RR retirement. Since I never returned to the railroad and never became vested, all my RR retirement funds and time served were transferred to Social Security.

Mine went through very quickly also, did it online a few years ago.

I believe it will the 3rd of the month.

Interesting. I had never had that question asked of me before.

I wonder how much human intervention it takes at SS for such a thing in the first place, Seems like a rudimentary software program would suffice it has all your stored information its just a matter of turning on payout after you direct who what when and where....

The days of large Marge at a black phone desk with a card file and #2 pencil have been gone for a real long time

Disputes, out of ordinary questions, i didn't get my payment situations a real person is needed then though

You would think that was the case, all just computer input. But that was not the case for me. For me at least, my on-line application was flagged as having missing information. Then it was down the black hole for over 2 1/2 months.. I would check it's progress on-line and all it would say is it was in step 3 of a 4 step process. It would never move. So I called the national number and waited on hold for 5 hours. Finally a human took the call and found my on-line application. They said the agent assigned to my case had a few questions for me but she was in the Pittsburgh SS office and they could not transfer me. They did give me her name, first and last. I called Pittsburgh and waited on hold for just over 2 hours and a woman answered and told me the lady I needed to talk to worked from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM. After the 2 hours on hold, It was 3:00 PM and she had gone home for the day. The next day, I began calling her direct line at 6:00 AM. I called every 15 minutes for about 1 1/2 hours. Finally she answered the phone. What was the earth shaking question she needed answered that held up my application for 2 1/2 months? She needed to know the city and state and year I was married!! That was all. I told her and a month later my SS payment showed up in my bank account. Without making the personal contact, it would still be sitting on someones computer I guess. BTW, the On-line application did NOT ask any question about where I was married and when! Just damn happy when that little payment shows up now every month.

You were more fortunate than many!

My wife worked for the state for a few years. Similar to you, she left before being fully vested in the state's retirement system. She did not have that time credited to either the state's full retirement nor to her SS. She kept her contributions in the state's account but the time credit was lost to the wind.

Railroad employees seem to have secured a lot of benefits unique to that industry - probably for good reason.

what a hassle. It asked me where we were married, had to ask Patti since it was 45 years ago. LOLOLOL.

I'm really happy with getting out of the 8-5 type job. I've been working, for the most part, since I was 8 with a Philadelphia Evening Bulletin newspaper route. I made very good money doing that too. I figured I owe it to myself to relax and do what I want, when I want.
