Window swipes on a 1980 Yellowbird

I need to replace both door window swipes and want to make sure that I order the correct part. Because the Yellowbird is based on the Esprite trim level, the swipes have a peaked half inch stainless sitting on top of it. I don't know if that piece is separate or does the new window swipes come with it attached.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Inside ?

78w72 11-05-2025 09:40 AM

Outside .

The outside window sweeps have 2 options, the type with the small chrome/stainless bead attached and the other type like yours that uses the bigger chrome/stainless trim that is not attached to the sweep, its part of the trim option with pieces on the rear fender tips and the back of the hood.

You would need the sweeps without the metal bead if youre going to reuse that trim. They should be advertised that way... with or w/out.

Hard to find and expensive. Sweep is the correct term. A swipe coulda been either.
Barry prob has both types, around 200 ea.

Who is Barry ?

The 1/2" chrome trim piece is not included with the window sweeps, but these are the ones needed for the chrome trim optioned cars... not hard to find or expensive.

If the OP needs the chrome trim pieces and not the rubber sweeps, theres lots of decent used ones that pop up on ebay or other online sellers. Ive sold numerous pairs of nice used ones for $100 or less.
Heres pics you can actually see that shows the different styles of window sweeps & trim...

The Yellow bird is considered a Special Edition car and so would only have black window sweeps no chrome on them.

Isnt the chrome decor trim such as drip rails, the tops of fenders and rear of hood an option available on every or most cars? Ive seen pics of yellow, sky & red birds with that chrome trim option and those cars would have the extra chrome trim on top the sweeps the OP is talking about, heres one with that chrome trim.

For cars with the chrome decor option they would use the sweeps without any metal bead then the chrome piece sits on top of it as linked to above. If they did not have chrome trim option they would use the standard sweeps with the small stainless bead. Did these cars come with just black rubber sweeps and no stainless bead for non chrome decor versions?

Here's a couple pics from the car in the Pontiac Transportation Museum (Pontiac Mi).

They are smooth (no peak).

Yes thats the sweep style with no stainless bead that is used for the chrome decor trim, the sweep is all black then the chrome trim installs on top of it. Both types of sweeps are shown in the above links.

The 'Yellow Bird', as well as 'Sky Bird' (aka: 'Blue Bird') and 'Red Bird', are all appearance packages on the Esprit model;
All Esprit model base equipment was included;
If you ever see an Esprit without the "Chrome decor" (aka: "chrome dress-up") stuff, then it was restored wrong.

The "Chrome decor" was available on all models;
The small exception is that I believe (going off memory here) a slightly tweaked version of the decor group was available on Trans Am's - but it changed what precisely was included with that option group - the TA was intended to be a model with less chrome.
I believe that the model year for the TA also played a factor.

Thanks, kinda what I was saying above. The different styles of welting were based on the cars trim options or if it had the chrome decor option.

The trim on top of the door and rear of the hood was an option but was included with the Esprit. The trim surrounding the window that goes up the A pillar, across the roof, and down the B pillar was a separate option from the other trim and also included on the Esprit.

Both trim options were options on the base, Formula, and Trans Am. The window surround trim was not available on t-top cars until mid 79 model year.
