Cool car. I was following the thread on Facebook. I don't think he knew it was a McAnn car when he first put it for sale. I assume they made multiples of these and send them to dealers for promos or is this the only one?

Did your new pair of shoes come with a four-speed? They may have if you were one of the winners of a Thom McAn GTO giveaway in 1966. Actually, to win one, you didn't even have to buy a pair of the company's GTO shoes, you just had to fill out an entry form at one of the 1,500 Thom McAns across the United States and then wait for the grand prize day to arrive. Fifty such winners were announced in Fall, 1966-one from each of the 50 states.
The 1966 Thom McAn giveaway GTOs were planned to be a genuine high-performance thrill. According to GTO guru Jim Wangers, the idea man behind the first contest promotion, "The cars were all [to be] painted Tiger Gold with black vinyl tops, and the winner was [to be] given a choice of a four-barrel or Tri-Power engine with either a four-speed stick or an automatic transmission. They were all [to be] equipped with power steering, power brakes, AM radio, Rally I wheels, and a choice of a black or pearl white interior." However, the '66 model year had expired by the end of the contest, so instead, the winners were presented with vouchers for the cash value of the above mentioned '66 GTO that could be applied to any new '67 Pontiac. |
The eBay car was sold to / through the Pontiac Retail Store in Michigan.
It shipped to an unknown dealer in the NewYork, NY Zone. In the past , it has been stated/believed that only employees could buy cars at the PMD Retail Store. I have absolutely no idea what is true or false about that factoid. I think this car was built too early for the contest..... However still a chance it might have been an early "actual display" contest car for them. The promo car pictured had black wheels and No Vinyl Top , same as eBay. It could be that actual car ? Especially if that picture was at a store in NY. Or a planned hoax |

I think you nailed it on the license plate frame , at minimum.
Once or twice a year another 66 Tiger Gold car pops up. They aren't exactly frog hairs. Not my color choice, and the condition is past what I would do unless it was one of my top color combos with the drivetrain intact. Even if it was a Thom car it wouldn't trip my trigger. Best wishes to whoever goes for it. |

I see several 63-64 Schwinn Stingrays in that photo.
I did exactly what they are doing. I’d ride clear across town carrying a box with my slot cars, controller and extra sliks. Here is a 100% factory Original K4 (Oct. 1964) J38 Stingray with the Solo Polo seat and rear Slik tire. Those were the days! |
You dudes had it made with big slot car track facilities back then.
They were either gone by my time or never had existed here. In 1970 my Grandfather backed over my cheap department store bicycle. My fault for parking it behind his car. He put us all in the car and drove to the Schwinn shop. I picked out a Blue Stingray. They picked out a Grey Ghost springer crate bike. It looked cool but I hated it. Heavy as 5 regular bikes and geared way too hard to pedal from a stop , for a 6 yo. I gave it away in 1974. Caught big hell for that. Mom bought me a very used Red Schwinn Typhoon 20" and I converted it into a homemade BMX bike before there were any BMX bikes. Then I was happy. |
Actually there was a new orange Columbia 20" right before the used Typhoon.
I broke the frame in less than a week, they gave me another duplicate bike. Broke the frame on the second one in less than a week. Mom said - Do Not tell them you jump ramps with it ! They gave her the money back and said that I must be too rough on them. The older guys I was riding with said only a Schwinn frame will last. Then I got the used old-timey Typhoon 20". Never broke it. Jumped everything we could find or build to jump. If they would have just got me the Blue Stingray to start with in 1970 I would have been set for life. :rolleyes: |
Closest picture I could find of the old Typhoon. Mine was red with a book rack on back.
I thought it was from the 1950s or early 60s Turns out 1967 was first year for chrome fenders. All that stuff came off, even the chain guard. Motocross handlebars with homemade shims in the gooseneck. Seat and metal rat trap pedals from my 10speed , and new knobby tires. I was Set . Bike was indestructible .
