68 Bonneville A/C Blower Motor Removal

I seem to have a short in my blower motor. (Going to go back and verify that again before trying to pull it.) It's in a 68 Bonneville with A/C. I was looking at the manual which says interesting things about removing the fender. Really!? Do I have to do that to get it out? Advice from those of you that have done this is appreciated.

While I have never changed the Blower motor on a 68 Bonneville, it is not unusual to have to remove at least the inner fender to get at 1 or 2 of the bolts that hold the blower motor, or the heater core housing. It usually is not a 10 minute job. At the factory all those components were installed before the front clip was added.

Unless you cut a access hole in the wheel well and then weld a patch on it, that’s the only other way I know of.

Before you go through all that work, what was it not doing for you to think it has a short?
Was it running before?
There's two fuses for the AC system that can affect the blower motor.

I worked for Pontiac in the 1970's and every one I knew just cut a hole in the inner fender. We closed the hole and undercoated it when done.

I was wrong

With careful poking around with 12V I discovered that the blower motor was not the immediate problem. When 12 V is applied, it spins. I found the fuse in the fuse block. I found the fuse behind the alternator. Any others? I took out the master and blower relays and see that they work when 12V is applied. I seem to have at least some vacuum control. But no joy. No blower and I want at least heat.

I've just acquired this car. I'm still discovering what was not put back together as it should have been. For example, there is no wire to the compressor clutch. ...So no way that would be expected to work.

Next move, I guess, is to get at the back of the controls and poke from there to see where the disconnect(s) is(are).

I still may need to get to that blower. On further observation it appears that the cooling hose for the motor that I expected to see is missing. Buit that's not the immediate problem.

Thanks to those above for their suggestions,
Bruce Clarkson

if you remove several of the wheelwell to fender outer bolts you should be able to bend the inner fender forward enough to reach the blower fan . . And don't worry about kinking it, it will not bend enough for that to occur. Secure the now bent inner fender with a bungee cord using while you are working on removing the fan assembly .

The fuse at the alternator is for "high" blower speed. It was always a problem and often melted the fuse holder. The factory came out with a "fix" for all the cars that used a single 20 amp fuse. We replaced the one 20 amp with two 15 amp fuses in parallel.
