Just got around from removing the front off my car and looking at the carb I always thought it was a restamp. Looking harder I have my doubts. The auto fitting may have come from a rebuild at one time.

Kenth 12-08-2025 05:37 AM

Fuel bowl looks legit, except auto fitting.
Look for fine stamped numbers on pass side of air horn and beneath fuel inlet.
1971-72 style pull-off and bracket.
Should have julian date on throttle plate, this one doesn´t have it.
Is there a dust boot and retainer on pump stem?

I´d say typical "factory" rebuilt carb using wrong parts.

The number under the inlet are there and the reman stickers is on the inlet adding the automatic inlet I'm sure. No date found yet wonder if they removed them as are build? I used a mirror for the inlet so they are backwards FYI

It's a legit center body / factory stamping.

The remanners just disassemble them and all the similar parts get put into batches with same similar parts of other carbs.
Cleaned inspected and prepped.
The 3 major components rarely - if ever - get rejoined.

Any without modulator port , get one installed.
Jets needles and hangers all replaced with general standardized spec stuff.
Then they go in a box with a part number that fits 50-100 different applications.

Throttle plate will have a casting number near one of the rear corners.
Looks like the casting number from the back of your carb - 7 little numbers in a circle pattern.

All the numbers look good. I’ve had a couple of these that were not dated just like this one , one was on a 69 raiv Firebird built in March. at the Lordstown plant.

Baron Von Zeppelin 12-10-2025 11:11 PM

The throttle plate casting number aligns , but not all of those castings were RA units.
If you ever remove it from the car , and post picture of underside , Kenth can determine if it is machined as a RA unit.
There are some intricate details that I have forgotten now.

I agree that some didn’t have the date.

With regard to the airhorn you need to take it off to access the numbers underneath not all correct ones have the stamped numbers on the pass side either.

There were variations in font on the float bowls also.depending on date code of the XB carb itself.

For that Baseplate you could also have that number and have either Carter or a Rochester made plate . The Carter is typically a more porous material for whatever reason.

Baron Von Zeppelin 12-11-2025 06:04 PM

Yes , the baseplate is inconclusive until carb is removed and underside is examined for which type of machining it received.
From a quick view exterior perspective - it passes the elementary grade.

You definitely have a remanned carb , that wasn't originally born on the car.
It came out of a box , after the fact.

Carter parts usually have a trademark C inside a circle . iirc
Rochester will have RP trademark.

This is where you'll find the logos for a Carter TB....visible with carb assembled...pretty sure this one is a '68 due to the vacuum tube.. The Rochester TBs have no "RP" logos on them that I've seen. You can also see the difference in the "grainy" structure of the Carter TB casting vs. the Rochester.

The Carter airhorns usually have the logo and cast number here. The Rochester airhorn cast numbers are not visible until the airhorn is removed. Also, showing the difference in float bowl logos.

That's a correct casting number for a '69 RA carb, but it's also correct for a 267 and 268 as well. The casting number will get you in the ballpark, but obviously the machining was done after the casting, and the machining is what makes a RA carb different.

To the best of my knowledge, no Carter parts or bits (airvalves, TBs, throttle plates, etc.) were used on the RA carbs.

Baron Von Zeppelin 12-13-2025 02:44 PM

It's a miracle if a remanner gets either the correct airhorn or correct baseplate back onto a legit main body. Don't think anyone has had one yet that even got 1 of the above back intact.

All the jets rods and hangers will be replaced with basic items.
And the primary throttle blades will be solid.
Unless someone has already made some corrections on it.

Here's the PMD Recall Letter that went to the owners of 1969 Q-jet equipped Pontiacs. This was for the Q-jet on the 350HO in a Custom S 4-dr Sedan.

On the base plate on a legit 7174 the off idle slots sit higher in the bore than a baseplate from a 268.
And the bypass air holes are a bit bigger.
I personally have only had one legit in my shop that I measured and there is a difference.
I've come across some RA carbs that have been swapped out with the 268 style 7174's
They are hard to tell unless you know the correct measurement or can eye ball it.
FYI

PS Has anyone came across a RA airhorn with correct cast number underneath that did not have machining for the dust boot?
I've heard "rumor"there was a few?

unruhjonny 12-15-2025 12:04 PM

I think that many people just don't understand this part:

...

These remanufacturers often had dozens or more carbs disassembled at any given time, and would rebuild them to be more or less generic "one size fits all" carbs - hence the at vacuum port always being installed.

except for the 1970 casting (of which I am unaware of any), there were certainly more than "a few";
One could explain it this way - A casting number was for the rough casting;
The manner in which a casting was finished determined the proper application(s).

This is how the most knowledgeable (of which I do not classify myself) are able to determine if the part is correct (or original to the assembly) or not.
