Exhaust heat riser removal

Have a '64 389, with the exhaust crossover blocked at the heads.
I know Pontiac eliminated the heat riser valve for '69, so I was thinking I might remove it from mine.

What's the best way to go about doing this? Almost seem like it's be less work to remove it all & tap/plug the holes, than trying to separate the butterfly & leave the 'axle' in place.

I used a cutoff wheel on a dremel to remove it, then tapped the holes and put screw in plugs in.

I cut the shaft and removed the flapper assembly. Then had a round plug machined to fit in the hole and pressed it in.
