Can anyone tell the date on this Honeycomb rim?
 

Anyone able to decipher these stampings on this 15" honeycomb rim and tell me the date code on it?

The "hoop" was completed in '72. Are there stampings on the inner side, outer lip? Usually opposite the valve stem.

These are honeycombs so nothing seen on the outer hoop that I can tell....

The date stamp is on the rear side of the outer rim...at least on my 14x7 Honeycombs...assuming the same for the 15x7's.

On the lip - of the inboard side that would face towards the engine .
Same clock position as valve stem , on reverse side.

Yeah because there is nothing on the outer lip like a Rallye 2 wheel that I can see ....so once I am near them again I will check the INBOARD side. Thanks a lot!

May want to look at the inside of wheel between the lug nut holes. Both the 14" and 15" i have here have codes located in that area.

There is a "G" stamped on the backside between the lug nut holes.... and what may be '918'


And there is a 11 and then a 7 on the inside outer lip on one and 11 and a 6 on another I can see.

I looked at two 15" wheels and one 14" wheel and the date on the lug nut area matches the date on the hoop, so I am guessing that in most cases they are the same, but I am not positive about that. With that said, my assumption on your wheel would be that it is a 1972 wheel.

No. To the best of my knowledge, the date is only given by the year and is indicated by the number that appears just below the MI which in your case is 2. Knowing that the honeycombs where only used from ' 71-'76, I believe that means the wheel was made in 1972. Also, in some cases you may be able to see a two letter designation stamped into the poly cast where the center cap mounts and that may also indicate the year which the wheel was made but I haven't been able to find much info on those letter codes, and they don't seem to show up on every wheel. Additionally, if the poly is not in really good shape in that area, you may not be able to make out the code if it is there. On the wheels here, the MI with the number below it does appear in the area between the lug nut holes. Hope this helps. There is probably someone here who has better info on this than I do but I have owned a bunch of these wheels over the years.

The numbers 11 and 7 may be the exact date code meaning November 7th as I see the photo the SD455DJ posted also has similar numbers and if like RallyII wheels, this Would indicate an exact date. I will have to take a closer look at what I have here to see if there is something like that on them.

X is the year of Mfg. ( shown as MI over 0 in Dennis picture )
Should be stamped nearby the month/day numbers you found

L 72 on the Inner hoop might relate to Nov 72 = 73 wheels

11-6 and 11-7 , Nov 6-7 .... of X

Yeah at first look I was inclined to think November (L) 1972 as well.

So glad you believe that could be the case.

Those letters I can barely make out on the lip near the 11 6 numbers

I was thinking L indicated December if it indicates a month.

Vendor parts with stamped dates don't use the letter " I " as a dating character. They skip it.

December would also post-date the November 6-7 rim assembly .

Got it. You learn something new every day, even at my age. Now I need to back and look at the wheels here to see what they have on them for letters. I have learned a lot about the honeycomb wheels through this thread. Does anyone have any detailed info on the trim rings used on the honeycombs. I have never seen any identifying number on them and always wondered if they did have a design change regarding mounting clips and if so, when? I have always thought that the clip change was done only on the reproduction trim rings but wasn't positive about that. Don't mean to hijack the thread.
