Sound and heat control for roof skin
 

What would be a good solution for sound and heat control before installing a new roof skin. I was thinking of attaching some butyl membrane to the underside of the new roof skin. There was a 20”x20” piece of some sort of fiber material and then all of the foam rubber blobs between the skin and the inner skeleton that the headliner attaches to. Thank you.

Thermotec is known for their thermal matting, but I used their acoustic matting for the interior when restoring my '59 GMC. I'v very happy with the sound deadening it does. And the adhesion is truly "forever".

Lizzard skin is a good brand of spray on type sound deadener, also controls heat.

Roof is a tough one to do sounds & thermal barriers on, especially on dark color cars. Any adhesive-type sheeting can have the adhesive fail due to heat.

Bracing doesn't help either. I did add some seam sealer on the GTO & T/A to strategic spots of the braces.

I actually thought about adding thin wood strips screwed to the roof braces in the event it fails, but due to time, I gave up on that. The braces have a step on them, and it would be easy to do. It doesn't have to apply psi to the sheets, just needs to prevent the sheets from dropping far enough to touch the headliner.

Surface obviously needs to be squeaky clean, and mat applied as 'tight' as possible.

Because of concerns, I was reluctant to install any on the 442, and used the thinnest sound deadener (Dynamat) on the GTO & T/A. On the T/A I'm going to use the thinnest thermal barrier (Dynamat) and see how it goes.

Lizard Skin is probably the safest solution, though there too, the surface prep is key.

The roof is one area I won't skimp on when it comes to material, a few extra bux or effort is well worth it.

If you're looking for sound and heat control on the roof specifically, you kind of do need to look at both a spray product and an absorption material.

As other have said, I'd use lizardskin spray on for your constrain layer. It's also going to cut a little heat out which will allow your adhesive backed insulation layer to stick better. I'm a big fan of the DEI under-carpet lite material. It's lightweight, moisture wicking and controls both heat and sound. Use the 3m general adhesive stuff and install it like you would if you were doing an alcantara headliner.

Friend of mine is building a pretty high dollar 73 firebird that used the lizzard skin products on the entire interior/floor/roof of the car. He had the entire car blasted then sprayed everything inside & out with SPI epoxy primer, then applied lizzard skin over that on the interior.

This is a 2 part sound & heat product, no reason to apply more sheet type products if you use both. He use the sound control on everything then did the floor & roof with the heat control. Car is ready for paint this week.
