Rebuild front suspension, add disc brakes to my 66 GTO conv
 

I posted this in the 66 GTO section but didn't get any responce, so I will try here. I hope to do a late winter project listed above. I want to keep my original 14" Rally I wheels. Any advice? Any kits better or worse? I see Ames has a kit that reuses backing plates. FYI I have a drive on hoist. Any good videos? Thanks in advance for help

When 14" wheels are being used, prepare to need to do some clearancing on the brake calipers, caliper mounts or both. While most of the kits that state they are good for 14" wheels were designed for that need, the parts supplied don't necessarily conform to those tolerances. So you've got to typically do some cutting and grinding.

Making sure your wheels are true is also a good idea here. Many of these factory wheels over the years have lost their true round.

As far as what kit to get, they all pretty much use the same repop calipers and rotors. The caliper brackets might differ a bit brand to brand, but that's not rocket science.

As already mentioned 14” wheels can be an issue.

Compounding that issue is the fact that 1966 14” wheels were designed to only work with drum brakes. By 1967 there was a disc brake option so the barrel of the wheel was redesigned to add brake caliper clearance.

Also keep in mind that not everyone checked the box on the order form for the optional discs so most Rally 1 wheels will be drum brake only. Maybe I’m wrong but I don’t think that they just started putting disc brake wheels on everything starting in 1967.

Aftermarket kits even when used with 14” disc brake wheels usually have clearance issues. Most manufacturers or sellers will tell you to use 15” wheels with their kits for this reason.

So I’d say using your drum brake Rally 1 wheels with either aftermarket or GM disc brakes is a non-starter. At the very least you’re going to have to search out a pair of ‘67-‘68 Rally 1 disc brake wheels and then deal with the hopefully minor caliper and caliper bracket clearance issues.
