Speedo cluster restoration?
 

I’m in the process of polishing the lenses and cleaning up gauges.

Don’t understand what this is on the turn-signal surface area? It’s like a chalky white surface?

I hope I didn’t make it worse by trying to swap it off lightly with Qtip and natured alcohol, it only returns?

I’m assuming this should be black and will light up when the turn signal is applied, flashing through the arrow shaped opening on the bezel.

I pulled apart my 70 cluster to compare with the 73 (above). Interesting to see the differences!

The 70 has two green circular lenses adhered to the front surface of the lens. When I pulled that lens, the cluster just has tunnels back to the bulb which is mounted in the back.

Your '73 should be the same as the '70. Lens should be a dark green and have a cardboard roll. Shining a light thru the open end will light up the other end green.

Gotcha, I’ll give that a try tomorrow when I get back on it.
So the surface of that green lens on the 73 cluster must have something going on with it that it hazed over like that. Hopefully can be polished clean again.

Here are a couple pictures. The tube has caulking material on the frame and the green lens fits over the tube and just nests inside the clear lens.

Thank you, those pictures are very helpful! I was hoping to not have to pull that face part off, but think it’s the right thing to do now. No way to restore the lens without pulling it.

But the first picture you posted, all you had to do was lift the black cover piece straight up.

You are correct, I hadn’t realized this till later. It was stuck together with some tacky gunk, but did come apart. 45 years of garage in basement storage can do that!

In fact, I was wondering if that isn’t perhaps what caused this moldy buildup? Maybe something got sprayed on the dash, penetrating in on these turn signal indicator lenses?

I just let them soak in some soapy, water, Dawn, dishwashing soap worked pretty well to remove most of it.

Couple more pictures of the gauges. The lenses polished up fairly well with plastic polish. Happy with the results!

I know! That stuff was so strange! Hard and crusty too!

I agree. These colors aren’t showing any fade at all. Of course only had 7 years of service, and haven’t seen the light of day since!
