New cam

Got a new comp cam HR to replace the crower HFT I’ve been using. Engine guy questioned a couple of the rhoads vmax lifters,, nothing wiped but while we’re in there I don’t want any upcoming possible problems. Had Kauffman custom grind,, asked for their 236/242 cam but add 2 more degrees of exhaust duration for a 236/244 112 ls. On their site the 236 /242 cam has an advertised 290 but mine is 286 . Numbers wise I’m just a little bigger than the crower I’ve been using. Hopefully it works out good. 455 .040 over, 9.75-1, rare manifolds with their 3” headpipes. Stock , slightly reworked iron intake. TKX trans with 2.87 first gear and 3.31 rear. I use crower SS 1.60 enduro rockers.
Only 67 degrees of overlap? |
Sounds like it will be an awesome combination. What does the “s” suffix in the grind/lobe number signify?
|
Heads are #64 and were cnc ported by sdperformance to 254cfm on the intake . Not sure about the "S". With the crower cam it made 491hp at 5200 /570 trq with 1 3/4 headers. Lost 15 hp with manifolds and mandrel bent 2.5" headpipes but now have rare oversized manifolds and their 3" headpipes.

Nice - found this in the online catalog, page 5 but not sure what it means in a Pontiac application:

What's the max lift your heads can accomodate?

If this is not the cam I need I will send it back, get another one or whatever it takes. I was told to get a B suffix and I thought thats what i was getting. Not much on line about a S suffix but it looks like for a small block chevy,,,extreme 4x4 family or something like that. Whatever that means. |
May want to call KRE - with the number of cams they order I assume he knows what he’s doing but good to check.
|
I think the Comp Catalog lists what the letters are.Tom

From random website++ Kind of strange……. The “B” after the 3303 designates the master used was for a bigger base circle application. Typically, on a SBC the suffix is an “S”. This lobe is from the Extreme 4x4 family. The exhaust lobe is from a family designed for use in LS1 applications. Specs: 265/[email protected] 216/[email protected] 112 lsa .316/.314 lobe lift The A8054-13 is the serial number, with the -13 denoting the year it was done……. 2013. |
Anyone have a cam card for kre 236/242 hydraulic roller? Thanks

Again from post 4

We will often see a roller cam ordered with a "B" suffix code after the lobe number. With the code they can, but not always, alter the rated duration. Typically with 1-2 degree less duration.
The duration at .050" and .200" remain the same. Also sometimes a "B' suffix code can, but not always, add an additional 0.001" to the lobe lift. Different journal diameters can alter the rated duration. . |
In the pic I posted (#4) it says if an S suffix is used in a BB Chevy application, the cam would grow approximately 2 degrees. I guess the question is does this mean the same thing in a Pontiac.

That is annoying that KRE lists a marine XR profile on their site then sells a XFI. Evolution lifters should be up to that though, XFI’s nearly always work best with beehive springs.
I didn’t realize that XFI is what they sent you. All the HR cams I have seen that came from KRE are ground on using an “S”. If I remember right if it would be ground on a “B” the intensity goes from 50* to 49* with a “B”. Your better off with the “S” on that cam. |
My specific explanation is what I've observed on roller cams ordered for a Pontiac application. Good examples are some, but not all, of Dave Bisschop's custom grinds. They are typically ordered with that code, and it doesn't matter if it's a Magnum Hyd lobe or a Xtreme Energy hyd lobe.
Example, here are numbers from a early Old Faithful cam as reported directly from a cam card: Grind number P8 3122B / 3120B HR112.0 Rated 289 / 306 at .006" tappet lift 236 / 245 at .050" 112 LS / 108 ICL Lobe lift .3800" and .3830" Note the lobe numbers have the "B' suffix code. Note the .006" numbers, 289 & 306, are slightly different than stated in the Comp Cams lobe section, they are 290 & 304 And another thing to understand often the duration numbers that show up on the cam card are ever so slightly different than what the catalog lobes show, as the Pontiac cams are typically ground on a slightly different base circle than the sbc/bbc typically use, and that can result in minor changes. . |
I can't comment on the S designation. I can say that Jeff K has specked two cams for me and he nailed it on both occasions. My first was a 232/238 also with XFI lobes. That cam made torque everywhere and carried power right to where you'd want to shift at 5500 or just there after.
My current cam uses QNI lobes. I will say however, the XFI lobes and the lifters I had on them (pre-updated Morels) was a very noisy combination. The current cam with Q lobes and Johnson short travel lifters is nearly silent. |
Bullet has a 4/7swap 236/244 @ .050. Intake lobe HR290/3625,,,,exhaust HR301/3595.
112+4. Im not blaming anybody for the confusion on the cam,,,just wish i had known. Not that I know what Im talking about. Im sure it would be fine just not what I was hoping for. |
Scott, This cam is a little bigger than RAIV right? Deffinately interested on how it performs. I have the same combo 455. .040 over, 4.45 stroke, SD ported #64 heads. So hard to find people using #64 heads LOL I have the FT RAIV in mine with Crower Cam saver lifters. 1.65 rockers. TH400/3400 stall tho and 3.08 rear.

Scott,my catalog has a number listed for the type of cam cores.Tom
