Pontiac 400 Engine Transplant in a Blazer
 

Has anyone installed a D-Port Pontiac engine in a late '70's Blazer? A friend is doing this and has asked me what headers or cast iron manifolds will fit.

I have seen a Pontiac engine in a 70's Chevy truck before and it just had rear dump log manifolds. I would bet that the A/F body ram air manifolds would likely fit since the steering box is up front.

I put a 400 in my 74 3/4ton chevy 2wd. Used mounts that fit the frame holes and I think some washers. Carb linkage worked forget what I used. Truck had 350 trans. I put long tailshaft 400. Column shift lever linkage worked for
park,Drive ,i just hard time getting MANUAL low. Thrn cut 2 pc driveshaft to work. Yours will be harder with 4wd,adapter needed. I used stk dport manifolds un modified then pipes were adapted.

I had a 455 in a 1963 Chevy PU and used stock exhaust rear dump manifolds.

Basically the same as the same year pick truck and they could be had with a BBC which is wider then a Pontiac so even headers should not be a problem.

Just remember that the battery will need to go on the drivers side unless you want to run a dam long positive cable.

The steering box being on the outside of the frame gives you more room to play with.

Most of those trucks had an option for a second battery. So a tray for the drivers side may be a bolt in item.

I have a 1977 C20 long bed High Desert CA. truck that i sat a 400 block in to see how much fab work if any would be required, The biggest hurdle was the spread of the frame in the motor mount area. Standard log manifolds should work very well.... ... Any off the shelf Pontiac header looked to be short in the down tube area due to the height of the engine in respect to the floor pan... The battery is easy with the Auxiliary batt. tray mount commercially available..... I don't have a water jet to cut out spiffy parts or top shelf welding skills plus i did not evaluate fan in the radiator shroud placement so i decided to rebuild the drop back in 4 bolt main C350 built a bit better than stock

When I installed a Pontiac engine in my 1963 Chevy PU I used all factory parts. For the motor mounts I used the "Z" shaped brackets that the rubber half of the late 1970's Chevy' motor mounts bolted to plus those motor mounts. Those mounts bolt directly to mid-late 1970's Pontiac 3 bolt metal half of the engine mount. Since you already have the "Z" shaped brackets you should have little trouble mounting the engine to the frame. You might have to move either the "Z" brackets or the rubber mounts slightly but it all should work okay. Good luck.
