8.2 Nodular Diff Missing Bearing Caps
I acquired a basket case 1965 GTO Tri-Power car, that came with a Nodular case '67 3.55 posi diff that was all disassembled. I popped the cover off and discovered that the bearing caps are missing. Car was bought from the widow of the PO, and she has no clue about any of this.
How difficult would it be to install caps from a donor BOP diff and get it line bored? Maybe I should just junk it and get a QP 9 inch or build an 8.5 BOP, since it is not original to the car anyways? I'm an hour north of the WA/Canada border, and Pontiac parts are scarce up here. Cheers, Brian |
I don’t know even where you would get the spec’s for the bore even if you found a shop with in a non crazy travel distance that could hone it.
I guess it’s done though because I think they offer steel caps for the Ford rears. |
Ya, I see they make billet caps for 9 inch and 12 bolts. Maybe I'll call Moser tomorrow and see what they have to say.
It is a pretty desirable rear end from what I gather. ZH code nodular 4 pinion for a 1967 GTO should have some value to the right guy, if I can salvage it. |
I've used Strange billet aluminum caps on GM 8.5" and 12-bolt rears and they work great. Just need assembly, ID measurement and possible machining.

I don’t see why line boring would necessarily be needed. I’d get some caps off a junk rear and install them with bearings and races see how they fit the rear should be inline with the axle bearings but I can tell you having launched stick cars hard for many years the rear ends can banana and still run really well. In fact stock eliminator cars set the rear up so under load they get straight which means the rest of the time they are bent. lol. So as long as the caps clamp the bearings and races properly that’s all you need to worry about
