68 Bird Deluxe Interior - Red vs Red vs Red???
I'm trying to determine the correct color of red for the sides of the console and vinyl dash pad on my 68 bird. The GM interior paint code document for 68 GTO, Tempest and Firebird lists Regimental Red as being the correct color for the front of dash, glove box, console, etc. Is that really correct for the sides of the console or did the console color match the red seats?
For the vinyl dash pad, was it actually a darker red, or was it originally the color of the door panels and seats? My first 68 Bird came with a red deluxe interior and the dash pad with the pillar covers were much darker, but red has a tendency to darken with age so I could never really tell what was correct. The original GM pre-production brochure shows a red interior on a 68 and it, shows a glimpse of the red dash pad above the gauge pod. In that photo it looks darker than the regimental red front metal dash but I can't tell if it is darker than the door panels and seats as it's a close up. The GM paint code for the zero gloss top of metal dash is actually burgundy which I'm guessing was done to more closely match the darker vinyl dash pad (or maybe for glare reasons). Just not sure. Again, what is correct color red for the vinyl dash and the sides of the console? Inquiring minds want to know......... If you have an original red interior or have documented what is correct, that would be a big help. Thanks Old Joe  |
I can't speak for a '68, but I have a '67 with red interior. As the '67 console is the interior color with no woodgrain top, I have used the Ames red paint both times I have repainted the console and it matches the seat and door panel color.
For the dash pad, mine is darker red than the rest of the interior soft pieces. I've owned the car for28 years and that pad was in it since I've had the car. The replacement pads I have seen are all the same red as the seats and door panels. The low gloss paint above the dash pad is not the same as the front metal dash. You mentioned yours is burgundy. I don't think I'd call mine burgundy, but it is a darker red than the front. Where did you find the paint code for that? I need to repaint that area on mine and need the code. |
Here are the 68 interior paint codes. I'm guessing you should be able to look up the 67 paint codes as well.
https://www.autocolorlibrary.com/pag...HorizontalTab3 The problem with these paint codes is they are really old and no longer used by most places that mix paint. I did order some of the low gloss front of dash red from NPD in spray cans. Haven't received it yet as I just ordered it a few days ago. Quote:

Also, you mention that you used the Ames paint on the console that matches the seat and door panels. Did your console retain some of the original red paint on it before you painted it?
Did the Ames paint match the original paint on the console? Thanks Old Joe Quote:
