What tire size for my Grand Prix?

Hey-
I’m looking to get bias plies for the front of my 62 Grand Prix. I’m doing a 62 super stock theme, I got pie crust cheaters on the rear and I want a good tall front tire to round out the look. I’ve thought a 9.00-14 and even thought about a 9.50-14. Thoughts? |
The original tire size was 8.00-14 or 8.50-14 with A/C. Original wheel size was 14 x 6K. I'm no tire/wheel expert, but I'd guess that a 9.50-14 tire on a 6 inch wide wheel would pinch the sidewall of the tire in somewhat, bowing the tread surface and causing a smaller contact point.
Depending on how authentic you want your "super stock theme" to look, I'd suggest a thinner front tire. Here https://hips.hearstapps.com/mtg-prod...75&format=webp is a picture of Don Gay's 62 Catalina from the front. |
I see what you’re saying. I just remember seeing a red Catalina that had 9.50-14 and it certainly looked tough, but I’d like as much contact patch as possible. Thanks for the input.

Go to Coker's website and check out the dimensions and what they have available.

Put the 9.50-14 tires on the front. All drag cars with the taller front tires they use for rollout have the sidewalls pinched to some extent.
It’s not like it’s gonna be unsafe to drive even if it’s not optimal. I mean you’re running cheater slicks in the rear so that’s not exactly optimal either. Buy the tires you like and have fun with it and don’t sweat the small stuff. Below is a screenshot I took from the Coker Tire website, they’re showing a 6.5” to 7.5” rim width range for the 9.50-14 bias tire. A 6” wheel will be more than fine and look good. |
