I had an idea yesterday oh boy , Degaussing Your Race Car
 
Anybody know anything about this? Degaussing? I just googled it. Yes you can and it helps! Gulp! I thought I was crazy,maybe, but it is supposed to help. Then how do you do it!

Degaussing refers to removing or evening out a magnetic charge.
This process is done when rebuilding permanent magnet and Alnico magnet type speakers, but its first big usage was in degaussing color tv picture tubes ( the CRT ) so the the needed color of the 3 electron beams hits the center of its related color dot on the screen.
In other words the pixels will line up.
Every color tv had a degaussing coil layed out around the perimeter of the screen and it only was energized for a few seconds when the tv was first turned on.

I can’t for the life of me see how this could help a motor, in fact it may harm a magnetic pick up if a motor uses such.

When I googled it. They were talking about the ferrous metals only. Like the crank. They were ssying,i didnt study it, it can improve bearing life. This isnt demagetizing. It's a technology that may go no where I know. They said do not use it as you said near anything electronic. I have a friend right now fleshing up his 455 in his 65 GTO. the shop does high end builds. He is going to ask about degaussing. Also someone else who builds race engines is going to check it out. He said he has tried cryogenics and hasnt approved or disproved its advantages.

Its also used to remove the magnetic signature of Navy Ships. All the ships I was stationed on had a degaussing unit.

It appears that bearing life is in reference to electric motor bearings. The magnetics of some types of electric motors can magnetize the bearings or the shaft. Metal debris is attracted to the magnetized bearing and starts causing damage inside the bearing or bushing the motor shaft rides on. Reliability of large motors is an entire field of study, primarily for factory reliability.

I did find one reference to demagging combustion engine parts. It appears that the concern is similar, metal debris sticks to bearing surfaces and cannot be easily wiped or blown off.

My brother in law is a Navy man. We went an a party boat in Virginia and he pointed out this big structure for doing exactly that. He is a nuclear engineer but did some brief work with underwater mines. Its crazy how many there are.

Never heard of magnetization leading to bearing erosion. Every industry has its own challenges I guess.

I once worked on a weird failure mode caused by static charge buildup in a high-rpm journal bearing. The static voltage would build high enough across the lubricant film to arc. The arcing affected nearby electronics but didn't destroy the bearings. The fix was to change the lubricant to one that dissipated the charge (more "conductive").

This residual magnetism effect sounds different... more like electrochemistry but is interesting to me!

Thanks guys for clarifying this idea. The idea came from watching WW II Degaussing ships to reduce there magnetic signature to magnetic mines the Germans were dropping.

Seems like they could have just called it demagnification or demagnetizing and eliminated the mystery. Degaussing sounds like unwrapping someone that's had a major full bodily injury lol. sorry jmo
