Air Conditioning
 

My 72 is an AC car, but the compressor bracket, compressor, condenser and lines are gone.

Not concerned about originality/appearance, just want a modern light weight system that will cool properly.

What do you recommend to do it right? Never worked with AC, so maybe I can install the parts and take it to a local shop that has a clue?

Get an updated compressor & condenser. Recalibrate the POA valve or replace it with a cycling switch like I did. Convert hoses & oil to R134a.

I also have a 72 Grand Prix. All my original parts were still present but didn't blow cold. Compressor and condenser were shot. I bought a new direct replacement aluminum compressor, new condenser, new POA and expansion valves, and had new lines made. I flushed the evaporator. Once I had it together, I took it to a friend's shop where he pressure checked the system and then charged it up with 134A. Last time I checked it was still blowing cold and it's been about two years. It wasn't particularly difficult since all of the brackets were in place, but the costs can add up quickly. And honestly, I rarely turn it on.

I've done original style and aftermarket in a few different cars. By the time you figure in barrier hoses, new POA valve, and all the missing components, it winds up being pretty close in price either way. The complete aftermarket systems are convenient and work well, only thing I worry about is replacement parts availability down the road if the company you get it from changes design or goes out of business. In that respect, a retrofitted sanden style compressor with original style components seems like the best compromise.
