'71 AM/FM radio repair

Need to send my '71 AM/FM stereo radio off to a pro for repair. Any places on the West coast that you'd recommend?

Problem is,...radio plays fine. But the tuner knob will only move the dial indicator to the right. It turns freely the other direction but indicator doesn't move.

Ideas? Experiences?

Hey Poncho enthusiasts, I am repairing and restoring 64-77 Buick Olds Pontiac Delco radios and 8 track players full time now. I just retired after 39 years as an electrical engineer in the semiconductor industry. I know these analog radios very well. I offer 7-10 day turnaround on most repairs with a 10 year warranty on all work performed. I have my own lab here at my house in Scottsdale and over 150 delco AM and AMFM radios if anyone needs a restored radio. I can also add bluetooth to any radio that works well and keeps the original fit and function and electronics of the stock radio. Send me a message and I'll get you in the que for a fast repair. Thanks, Jim

If you take the top cover off, look for any contact points on those moving parts as well as the gear teeth at the end of the tuner shaft. You can use a little household oil to lubricate those areas.

Jim does great work. He's done 3 radios for me and an 8-track over the years...I still own two, and both work great. He's a good guy as well.

Try loosening the 5/8" nut against the faceplate on the tuner shaft a little first.
I also recommend Kevin Wagner in Waverly, Neb. (Wags Klassic Electonics on Facebook).

I sent my 72 Formula Am/FM stereo and 8 track player to JV Restorations. 8 track is as good as new. He’s in So Cal. Did great work. He had them for a few months though. His web site has all the info:

Jim Shepard does great work. He had my AM/FM mono working and like new in less than a week.

I can second Kevin Wagner, he fully serviced the UM6 ETR AM/FM Cassette in my Pace Car and added in Bluetooth, restored a nice 1971 AM unit and added Bluetooth that went to Dubai to go into a 1971 HO, I've sent him heaps and will continue to send him more.

Thanks for the tips guys. After repairing my radio myself and having it last a whole 5-6 minutes, I sent it off to a pro so it'll stay fixed.

Way late update here on my AM/FM stereo radio repair. I had sent it to Jim Shepard. It's in and perfectly functioning. Couldn't be happier. Reasonable price and fairly quick turnaround.
I'll use his services again if ever needed. Two big thumbs up!
