Pontiac 1955 - Carter WGD Carburetor rebuild, help and choke options
 

I am planning to rebuild my Carter WGD Carburetor from my 1955 Pontiac (287 engine). There isn't any tag with the exact model number, but according to the shop manual it should be one of these types: 2182S, 2182SA or 2182SB.

I have to confess I'm a bloody first timer with this, it's my first carb rebuild :oogle:

First question: What do I need?

Second question: Do I need any special tools?
I have small round brushes from 1 to 6 mm, and a friend of me has an ultra sonicbath. Any other tools I should buy?

Third question: What is the best choke option?

Before you do anything with the choke make sure the choke hot air tube INSIDE the manifold is not burnt out. That may be why it was converted to manual in the first place. If it is rusted through and you don't fix it you will ruin the new choke and possibly damage the carb.

Oh how nice - thank you for that link! I think I have all parts, but can't hurt to have these spares.


I think this must be the hole to the tube you say, it looks like this, see attachment. Looks like it's closed by that screw, no clue whats behind it... The pipe from that hole to the carb is missing too.

Is the electric choke maybe the better option...?
