64 Front Bumper Reinforcement Bar
 

Seeking feedback / opinions on the necessity of installing the front bumper reinforcement bar on my 64 Lemans convertible. First let me state that I am a purist at heart. I have restored several cars and all have been frame off restorations. I prefer to keep them as original as possible. When NOS parts are not available, or more often than not, beyond my budget, I will spend my time and money to restore original parts instead of buying new reproduction.

With this being said my current project is a 64 Lemans convertible. Bought it over 10 years ago. Has some rust issues (nothing beyond repair) but pretty much an unmolested car. Over the years I have completely dissembled it and like a lot of you some parts are waiting to be worked on, some in process, and some wrapped up ready until the day to be reinstalled.

Recently I just had the original front bumper re-chromed. Although it will be some time (probably a year) be fore it will be mounted, I am going through my parts to confirm I have everything. So this leads to my question. When I removed the front bumper I do not recall seeing the reinforcement bar and I do not have it anywhere. Is it necessary? Other than possibility being required at the time to meet safety standards ( and adding about another 10 lbs.) does it have any significant purpose?

Even though you will never see it when the bumper is mounted, as a purist I am not opposed to installing it (but would need to find one). What's your feedback / opinion?

My guess is it's a little extra reinforcement because of the large, horizontal gap in the bumper. I ck'd mine and it's gotta be less than 5 lbs., plus, you have a year to find it or buy another.

It was used in 66 and 67, so if the 64 exploded diagram shows it, it was a factory piece.

@Andre My 67 does have one. The 64 diagram information shows it as #33. I have a source locally who may have one. Found one listed on eBay as well. Any one out there have one for sale just incase?

If you never use your bumper jack you will never need it. If helps keep your bumper straight when jacking the car.

I found one in my stuff if your local one doesn't pan out.
