Hood Clearance RPM and 1965 GTO
For you guys with a 65-probably the sme as a 66 or 67 that are running an RPM intake how much extra hood clearance do you have-like for a carb spacer?
Picture of how you did carb linkage? |
Skip, a 1967 GTO here. With a quadrajet, 1967 factory intake and 1 " spacer I measure 2 7/10" clearance with a wad of tinfoil. I don't know how much taller an rpm is but I bet you know
|
Trying to see if a Bathtub might fit. It is about 1.5" taller than the RPM-granted way longer. RPM is going on first. I think trimming down one of the linkage bracket bosses on the RPM a factory bracket will bolt on.
I remember one of the guys from Ala.(Henson last name) in NMCA had an RPM and the factory ram air pan modified for a Holley on his. |
Skip, I also have the new bathtub that I was thinking of using on my 65 GTO. A few years back my friend had the intake off his 65 GTO engine so I took the opportunity to test fit my bathtub on his car. He only had one Edelbrock carb so we put the manifold on his motor and set the carb in the front position. With the hood closed and looking through the open scoop you could see the choke tower was about 1/2” lower than the bottom of the scoop. Not much room for air cleaners although I’m sure with a little creativity you could get something to work. I don’t think any kind of carb spacers would work if you want to use air cleaners. On a race motor without air cleaners you probably could use spacers under the carbs and still close the hood. Either way the carbs a close to the sheet metal of the hood. I’m currently in the process of building a 421 for my 65 GTO. For now I decided to go with a Tri-Power, but in the future I still might try the bathtub.

Thanks. How was it length wise to the scoop? Wonder if someone makes a hood with a slightly taller GTO scoop? Even fiberglass those hoods are heavy! Cowl hood would kind of loose the GTO tone I think.
A few years back one of my local buddies built an MGB with a aluminum Buick/Land Rover V8, muncie narrowed F body 10 bolt and being a Pontiac guy he grafted a GTO scoop on it. looked pretty cool! |
The 65-67 GTO hood is a pretty tastefully done piece of engineering.. Only change i would of made is proportionately the same but slightly bigger and everyone that left the factory was functional
|
Skip, we did this test a few years ago so it’s hard to remember how the bathtub was positioned front to rear with the scoop. I was more interested in seeing the clearance for air cleaners, but I do remember that the scoop opening was in front of the carb by at least a few inches.

On my 67 with RPM intake and 4150, there is about 3.75-4"" between the carb's air filter mounting surface and the non-scoop area of the hood.
With a 3.5", 14" diameter air filter, the wing nut has enough clearance to clear the inside of the scoop. The outer edges of the lid have about 3/8" clearance to the flat part of the hood. There is less clearance to any of the underhood bracing, but a single 14" round filter doesn't extend into that area. |

How tall is the bathtub intake? My 65 with a factory hood will clear a Wenzler TR with AFBs on it. With 1" spacers had to add glass hood with SD scoop.. Bottom of intake rail to flat top is 7".

Mike here is the numbers I got from Tom S SD Bathtub reproduction 7 7/16 / 9 3/8 Front and back to the valley pan lip on the block. I'll double check mine with the thinner Holley adapters I made. I think someone on the intake height thread put a Gustram at 10.7". About the same as my Warrior TR.
