New to me 1965 Grand prix
5 Attachment(s)
I'm a long-time member here at PY but new to the Darkside. I have owned my 1977 Grand Prix since 1982. My 72 Lemans Sport convertible since 1987. I have a 1994 Grand Prix with the B4U package since 1997. In 2013 I bought my 1979 Trans Am. I still have all these cars. Last week I bought a 1965 Grand Prix. This car has been on my bucket list for a long time because my dad bought two 65 GP's back in the 70's. I learned to drive a stick in one of those when I was 15. Also, 1965 was my birth year. I have always told my wife that I wanted a car older than me. This car I bought was built in the 4th week of March making it 3 weeks older than I am.
I don't know much yet except that it was built in Kansas City Kansas and sold by a dealer in Edmond Oklahoma. I' m still waiting for the PHS documents to come back. The odometer says 95,000 miles but from the looks of the suspension parts, I bet its 195,000 miles. I am going back original except color. Keeping the drum brakes and 14-inch tires and wheels although if I find a nice set of 8 lugs, that would be cool. I'm keeping the fender skirts too. My work on this will be slow but I will post pictures when I accomplish something. Attachment 668931 Attachment 668932 Attachment 668933 Attachment 668934 Attachment 668935 Paul |

65 Grand Prix is a great looking car. Light on exterior trim, really handsome. Great interior. Looks to be in solid condition. Congrats. You said going back to original color. What were they? Curious.

1965 Grand Prix Brake work
5 Attachment(s)
It's a slow process. I'm working on the brakes. Almost every part is bad. The booster will not hold vacuum. It has been removed and I will need to have it rebuilt somewhere. The master cylinder is locked up and will not move. This is a Delco Moraine booster and master cylinder. The master has a screw on jar type lid. I will be installing a 1967 Grand Prix dual master cylinder. The front rubber hoses are original, and the passenger side has imploded, and no brake fluid can pass through. Both front wheel cylinders are locked up. I am keeping the drum brakes so this will all be rebuilt and repaired. The drums appear to have a lot of material left on them. I will measure and then find a local place who will turn them if I can. I have new hoses and thankfully they are identical to what I removed.
This booster was painted black. I have seen others from this year with the 9-inch Delco Moraine painted black too. Is this correct or should it be cadmium? This is a Fairfax Kansas City car. Also, I had no rubber seal between the booster and firewall. Is that correct? Thank you, Paul Attachment 670293 Attachment 670295 Attachment 670296 Attachment 670297Attachment 670298 |

I need some help. I'm reworking the front drum brakes first. This car had zero brakes. While the booster is off being rebuilt, I am changing shoes and wheel cylinders. The wheel cylinder links are rusted and pitted. I am sure they will allow dirt and moisture past the rubber boots. I have had no luck finding the correct replacement links and I am hoping that someone here knows a correct part number and brand. I have seen a few that were close but not correct. The fork part has been too big on the others I have found.
The dimensions are 1.5 inches in length. The small end is 5/16 and the fatter section is 3/8. The opening in the little fork end is .200. Its strange that these little links are not included in the brake hardware kit, nor the wheel cylinder kit. Thank you for any help. Attachment 671069 Attachment 671070 |
