69 Catalina rear end info
 

I found a 69 Catalina wagon in a salvage yard that has a Posi. It is a 10 bolt BOP, my question is wat size is the center section. Is its bolt in for the A-body? Or is it a larger ring gear. I tried to search it and could not find the answer. I know the rear end is wider. I just want the Posi unit. Thanks

If it is the stock rear end it will be a Pontiac 8 7/8" axle, unfortunately it will not bolt into an A-body, and the ring gear is larger, the same size as a Chevy 12 bolt, but a different gear. I wish you were closer as I would be interested in the carrier if it is a 3 series that would work with a 3.23 gear set.

Thanks I believe it’s a 8.2. Here is a picture of the diff cover. I’m still going to pull it. It’s in Colorado. Just can’t leave it to be crushed.

someone else may know by site how to identify that rear. The big cars from 65 - 70 were 12-bolts with a ten bolts holding on the diff cover. If you actually have a Posi, some big car guy will want it.

Here is a factory 4.11 Safe-T-Track rear end from a '68 428HO Catalina. The cover looks correct.

'65-70"P" series rear s only fit appropriate year Pontiac B series.
IF a factory Safe-T-Track in 2.93-3.08-3.23-3.42... ratio, worth popping the cover & cking out the internals.
Bought several many years ago, when I could find them as halfway affordable core rears.

Well I laid in the dirt and fought a stuck drum only to open the cover to find the gears to be welded solid. So lesson learned. Open cover first. But still had a good day at the salvage yard and not at a real job. Tomorrow is the Coys swap meet in Denver and the weather is supposed be perfect.
