older 2 piece balancer use

i ran one of the older balancers for years on my 66 no problems. just wonder if on a 400 at 500hp or below if anyone thinks theres a problem with them...on a street strip type build?

ive got several later 68 covers and later 11 bolt covers but since i have a nice 64 cover/balancer/pulleys that seem to be garnering 0 interest, i was thinking of using them.

while im degreeing the cam and have the #1 piston exactly at tdc i was thinking of installing the cover and balancer and adding timing tape. since tge 64 cover has only a pointer i dont know any better solution.

i expect this 400 go need to spin to 6500+ with the 290b cam thats in it.

I would not use a smaller OD balancer on a motor that will buzz up to 6500 even if it was just made yesterday.

the rpm range is whats had me worried. ive got this motors original 11 bolt cover along with a stock replacement balancer that might be the best option.

If you are going over 6500, might be time to look at an SFI unit.

Pontiac made a performance two piece damper. It's about double the width of the standard unit. That's the hot set up for a performance build when the want to maintain the correct look for an earlier build.

What was the application for this performance two piece damper? I have a damper from a 67 428 HO that is larger than standard, it sticks out of the pulleys a small amount. Most dampers that I have seen are completely inside the pulleys.

i never knew they made a performance version from tge factory. i seen butler has their new performance version but im not sure what might be better about unless its just the material or the fact its not over half a centry old. i may just run the later version on it for now since i did snag up a bargain on some pulleys the other day

Not sure what balancer came on the 1970 455 #64 headed engine. But I ran it for years with no issues. Sent it to Dan back in the day and he checked it out and added timing marks.
