relay kit for headlights?
 

Was in the garage today looking at the jinky 50+ year old headlight wiring and want to fix that as well as improve the lighting if I can. Can anyone recommend a headlight relay kit for a 68 Bonneville. I imagine that there isn't too much real difference across the years for quad headlight Pontiacs. But for the record, the outside two headlights on my car are three-prong, with I think two filaments. On low beam, the two outside headlights come on and when you select high beam, the second filament on the outside lights remain on as well as the inner headlights which I believe only have one filament. (Perhaps both filaments on the outer lights come on together on high beam?)

Can anyone recommend a relay kit for my car? I would like to try halogens first before getting into weird looking LEDs. see plenty of quad light relay systems for sale, but they all seem to only have the H4 plug, which I believe is similar to the three-prong plug. I am looking for something that is more or less plug and play with minimal cutting and hacking of the existing wiring.

Failing a recommended kit, can someone provide a detailed schematic of a layout to build a system from bits and pieces? Simple is better with basic instructions would be great. Is there a newer style two-prong plug? Is it even needed?

The back of the headlamp buckets have to be cut to a larger ID to clear the back of the new Hella lamps
The inboard headlamps are wired up with only two of the wires. I just left the low beam connector empty.
I was completely rewiring this car with the American Autowire 'Classic Update' setup.
The MSD relay(s): Power fed from a MegaFuse (part of the AA Classic Update setup) and triggered by the high beam and low beam wires from the headlight switch/foot switch. The power to the Megafuse is coming straight off the battery.
The MSD is mounted on the back of the core support, tucked in behind the battery.

Is this as simple as being too short to cross the front of the car? As nearly as I can tell it has two relays, one for high beam, and one for low beam. The power and ground wires, a fuse, two three wire low beam headlight plugs, (presumably three prong) two three wire high beam headlight plugs presumably two prong), and ONE male three prong plug to run to one of the existing low beam headlight plugs to act as the trigger for both the high and low beam relays. What am I missing?

All the universal fit 4-headlight relay kits are gonna have the same basic stuff….2 relays, some terminals and wiring. If you think that’s the relay kit you want, why not try contacting them and talk to tech to find out why it comes up as “not fitting” your ride.

It’s “possible” there’s not enough wiring supplied to cross the front, but no one here is gonna know that for certain. Maybe their “fitment software” isn’t fully populated with all cars.

CALL or EMAIL THEM. If they don’t answer or can’t help you, then you know not to buy from them.

Yes, obviously, would have called, but they are closed for inventory or something or another through the 10th. Just wondered if anyone spied anything with the Dapper kit that would render it no good for my plans.

According to the description this kit will trigger all four bulbs as hi-lo, this will give me all four headlights on for low beam, and all four headlights on for high beam. I presume this means I will need to purchase two new hi-lo halogen headlights. Will report back once its installed and I try it out.

Kit arrived a couple of days ago. First a stupid admission on my part, I thought the H4 three prong plug would accept the H5006 sealed beam hi-lo halogen bulb. It does not. I chose to install the harness with the relays being mounted on the passenger side of the car on the front of the radiator panel. Drilled the holes for the relay mounts through one of the headlight buckets. By placing the relays on the passenger side, that meant the power lead was too short and so I had to lengthen that run of wire.

I didnt want to spend more money on LED lights or modern halogen with replaceable bulbs, so I depinned the H4 plugs and moved the wires over to two of the existing three prong headlight plugs. I had part of an old headlight wiring harness with the needed original equipment plugs and pirated those. Taped up the old headlight leads removed from the factory bulbs, and pushed the unused wiring back behind the grill.

I used the orignail high beam plug on the passenger side as the trigger for the relays, but this required a trip to the auto parts store for a replacement headlight plug to accept the trigger plug.

The biggest obstacle was pulling everything part after finding the sealed beam 5006 bulbs wont fit the h4 plugs on the harness I bought. As this kit turns on all four headlights on low and then turns on the second filament in each bulb on high, I also needed to buy two new 5006 hi-lo bulbs. I still need to aim these things, but I think it will work well in the end.
