I am trying to ID my power steering box. I can't really tell what the first number is. The rest look like 91676. Would this indicate a quick ratio box?

5691676 is the casting number for power steering boxes for many GM cars for several years.

Here's a description of it on the CRG (Camaro Research Group): " The power steering box was casting 5691676. Many different gearsets for many different applications were installed in those castings. Someone here may be able to get you closer to an answer by manually determining the number of turns lock to lock.

Thanks! Once I get it down off the ramps, I will verify the turns lock to lock and go from there.

Do you know the source of this unit?

On 68 400s and all 69 Firebirds the box was variable ratio. From center to full lock was only 1-1/4 turn, and you could easily recognize while parking just how quickly the ratio increased. Fun feature.

I recall as a mechanic driving many cars, noticing that same dynamic in Cadillacs around that vintage.

There were "quick ratio" boxes (non-variable) in later years, but I'm not knowledgeable on specific applications.

Thanks for adding the VR insights. I believe that the '68 400 (and maybe as option on others) VR started during 3/68 builds. My January '68 400HO has the standard PS. For a while I believed I should have had VR based on the AMA specs. The problem is, the stop to stop turns were higher than the VR/your quote. Then the Rocky Rotella 1st Gen book, an earlier '68 AMA spec, and a Tech Bulletin told me why I don't have it.)

I had a 68 400 that had the VR box
that said I dont recall when that car was made.

My 68 Sprint has a high effort/quick ratio box from a 79 TA I converted in 1980
These are 2.2 turns lock to lock.
