Autogear Muncie stuck in third
 

Hello, Car has about 100 miles on it, was driving this morning and trans got stuck in 3rd. I thought it was clutch related but the clutch was able to disengage fine. Drove it back about 1/2 mile and shut car off. Car was still in third. I went under the car and was able to "tap" the shift lever back into neutral. I can shift gears but i notice it seems very "notchy" and takes a bit of effort. I have recently started driving car again and i don't remember the shifter being this difficult. It is a Long shifter i think the HB-1000s not a muncie. Any ideas as to why? also the trans was procured from Autogear and like i said i had driven it before. Something in the side cover or maybe the shift levers? Thanks

What type of gear lube did you put in it?

What rating of GL gear lube did you put in it?

this is what i used: Sta-Lube API/GL4 Multi-Purpose Gear Oil 85W90 SL24229 GL4 Hypoid Gear Oil for Corrosion Protection.

Also are you thinking of wear on shifter forks? This was a new trans so im not expecting wear. I did check the shifter blocks and they are aligned.

My old Muncie would get stuck in 3rd from worn shifter bushings.

I am not familiar with the Long Shifter for a Muncie. But if it is similar to a Hurst, it will have adjustable stops of each gear. The shifter may be allowing you to overshift and getting the slider stuck on the hub. After looking inside to make sure everything is OK, I would mount the shifter and check the linkage and stop adjustments. As you know, the 2/3 shift is the most difficult to get perfect in a Muncie or BW. 1/2 sleeve has to go to neutral perfectly and 3/4 has to go from neutral to 3 in one somewhat complex motion.

Hello, In terms of the Autogear, i think they are great. All components seem like a high quality and seems to work well except for this latest issue. I drained the old fluid, it had been in for 9 years and i had not driven it much if at all in that time and was working on other items. The fluid seemed to have been "separated" slightly and did have some thicker component in it, maybe an assembly lube? Regardless i changed the fluid out for some Driven 80W90 GL4, while i did that i ran a scope thru the trans and looked at the shifter forks and synchros and everything looked ok. After the refill the notchiness was really reduced. I drove back and forth in my driveway to distribute it and had no issues. If i have time i will go drive it later today.

While anything *is* possible, AutoGear components are generally excellent. I wouldn't suspect you're experiencing a fundamental issues.

Gear oil can and will breakdown overtime. As cheap and easy as it is replace/refill, flushing your manual transmission every couple of years isn't a bad idea.

I'm willing to bet that the gear oil lost some lubricity and/or became tacky and that caused a synchronizer to bind up.

It sounds like you've already found some positive result with the flush. Put some more miles on it. In fact, take it on a long cruise to get the gear oil to max temp and run the transmission through the gears several times. That should distribute the new gear oil throughout the case and gearset.
