1965 GTO tri-power throttle cable
 

Hello, can someone recommend a supplier that sells the best replacement throttle cable for a 1965 GTO with tri-power. It seems that all replacement cables sold are too long and are listed for 4 barrel and tri-power applications. I would also be interested if someone has an original cable for sale. Was there really any difference between a Tri-Power throttle cable and a common 2-barrel cable?

Asking because I’m using the original 1964 2-barrel 326 cable on the 1964 Tri-Power 421 in my Le Mans and it seems fine.

Also used the original 1964 6-cylinder cable with a 1966 Tri-Power unit I used run in my Tempest which worked fine also.

I second this as excellent, there is so many repo ones from different vendors over the years and most are wrong length.

Thank you all for your responses. I ordered one from Pontiac Tri-Power and it is to be delivered tomorrow.

Please let us know how it works. You may know that '66 is the only year Tri-Power that has a center carb bracket that allows adjustment for throttle cable length by bending the center carb throttle lever bracket. Also, 'the '64 original cables had three holes in the carb end to select proper full throttle and idle movement.

I agree with B-man--the standard Tempest/LeMans two barrel cable would work with Tri-Power, also.

So many setups I get hare to restore have loose/damaged center carb throttle levers due to improper adjustment of the cable. It takes two people to check that the center carb is fully open when the accelerator pedal is on the floor, not that the carb is wide open before the pedal hits the floor. The same is true of the slider adjustment. It needs to be adjusted to open all three carbs fully at the ame time.

I received the cable and compared it to my original. My original cable is 18 3/4" from eye to eye. The new cable is 19 5/8" long. I have a good friend that also has an original 1965 GTO Tri-Power, and we removed his cable and it also measures 18 3/4". Both my car and his car are original tri-power cars, the only difference is the factories where they were built. All throttle and carburetor linkage part numbers are the same. I am going to shorten the new cable that I purchased by cutting to length and pressing on a new stop. The new cable purchased will not work as supplied. I put my old cable back on to use the car and will update when I get a chance to modify the cable. Is it possible our sponsor could contact the manufacturers of these cables to see if they could supply the correct cables? Can anyone suggest a local cable manufacturer that would be willing to manufacture the correct cable or be willing to modify the cables supplied. I will keep you all posted. Thanks, John

I have read that the best way to shorten a throttle cable is to ‘bird nest’ the cable end and use solder to create a new barrel end. I followed this video to shorten mine to use on my ‘64 Tempest with a factory style dual quad. It worked perfectly for me. Good luck.

I just completed the modification to my throttle cable, and it was easier than I expected. I cut the stop off the cable as close to the end as possible with a Dremel tool with a cut off wheel.. I then measured the length required and crimped on a new wire rope stop. I then cut off the excess cable with the Dremel tool. My cable diameter measured (.061) or 1/16". I purchased copper wire cable stops from McMaster-Carr under part number 3926T44.I made a slight modification to the cable pedal connector to fit the new stop. The stop is slightly larger in diameter than the original stop. I merely opened it up little with a small chisel. Installed the cable and all works perfectly. Note; some cables are (.077) or 5/64' and will require a larger cable stop. If I ever have to do this again, I will order the cable for a 4-barrel application. The only reason is the cable is longer and you have more cable to work with.
