Are you considering putting this in your 455 HO, if so is your HO the high comp 1970 version?

I went to Tin Indian site and they do not list the info for that grind unfortunately.
If we assume that it’s close to the original Cam then a 455 should idle 11% better then that Cam would in a 400 due to the 11% greater stroke of the 455. I think there can be found a video of how a factory RA4 Cam idles in a stock RA4 motor, so you could at least listen to that. Are you planing on running the 1.65 ratio rockers that would normally go with that Cam? I guess you could also contact Tin Indian and get there opinion once they get back from Norwalk. If nothing else your 12% bigger then a 400 motor should pull more idle vacuum. I don’t know what your looking for in terms of a power band for your motor, but you can consider the hp numbers to be nosing over pretty well with a 455 motor by the time 5600 rpm comes around. I would say that torque production would peak by 3800, so you should use that for setting up your converter if auto and rear gearing for your proformance needs. Here a recommendation chart that HO racing use to publish on the subject. To this day this chart is still very accurate in regards to a street / sometimes strip motor. If your not planning on doing a lot of long distance highway driving, then do not disregard what the chart recommends for rear gearing if your running tall rear tires! |
Remember that roller cams don't have the same limitations that flat tappets do and so some may have more lift with 1.5:1 rocker arms

Here are the details of the build using Butler Performance Ram Air Series cam - Roller 041
W72 988 block, .030 overbore for a 406 cubic inches, Stock crank, Eagle Forged H-Beam connecting rods, Forged TRW pistons, Holley Brawler 750 Double Pumper, Port matched Edelbrock Performer RPM intake manifold, Edelbrock performer RPM 72cc Heads (Ported), 10:1 compression, Butler's Roller 041 Cam, 1.65 scorpion roller rockers, Comp Cam roller Evolution lifters, round port Doug's headers 1 7/8th primary and 3.5 inch collectors. Exhaust is 2.5 inch mandrel bent pipes with an H-pipe thru Texas T/A mufflers. Estimated numbers are 450HP and 480TQ. Time constraints did not allow any dyno action. |

Specs are very close to the Butler version.

Napster I must say that your HP estimate of 450 hp is low for your combo, I would say 480 should be much more like it.

Runs great but would like to tame it down a notch . Rich idle . I’ve done carb adjustments. Transition slots and all . Idle air bleeds .

Other then trying out more timing if you have not already i would say that you have a few choses to try.
In no particular order . Step down to a 750 carb . Get annular boosters put in your 850 . Advance the cam. Loosen up your lash by .005”. Switch over to a rpm performer since this will also make your carb seem smaller and this manifold will have no problem restricting your 240 cfm heads . Note that a rich idle condition will load up the plugs and once that starts the idle rpm will drop off. Many times folks thing that there motor at idle is smelling rich when in reality that eye burning smell if from being lean . Please post up a picture of a few of your plugs. |

how far off is this from stump puller? if it is close, some threads about that cam might be worth reading.
