If you have the mixture screws are out only 1/2 turn each, I will bet you have the throttle blades too far open, trying to get it to idle. Turn the screws out to 2 turns and see if the idle picks...

Wasn't worried about the small register per se. I was only mentioning to help identify which crank I was referring to that had the narrow counterweights. I've decided to use it.

I've built about 10 flat hydraulic flat tappet lifter Pontiac engines over the last 2 years. No issues on them. I only use Hy-lift Johnson lifters though.
