do the primary (front) nozzles squirt fuel IMMEDIATELY when you just barely move the throttle? if not, try adjusting your accelerator pump linkage.

Seems like I don't hear as much about the Lunati or Bullet/Ultradyne lobes these days. Also, what about the older Comp high energy lobes?

If you just want to get an idea of the condition of a bare block, is a telescoping bore gauge sufficient? Will a digital caliper get you close enough when you measure the bore gauge?
