Thanks for the detail.
So when we see (modern) pictures of 70 RA4 cars with Ram Air IV on the scoop, this was just recently added as Gratuitous Bling?
See below video about 0:35.
Also, Chestnut's...

Appreciate the offer, message sent!!!

I don't see a Ram Air IV on that scoop - maybe the prototype RA4 car didnt have the fancy lettering? That would mean that in the early magazine articles eg...

I Had to read that a couple times but answers a lot of questions I had.
I had thought that Feb 1970 was way too early for a RA4 Firebird.
And it would be - in fact most of model year 1970 would be...

I have the June 1970 Car & DRIVER but not June 1970 Car LIFE.
The Car Life was 14.40 at ___ MPH?
Car & Driver was 14.10 at 103.2mph.
That 103.2 is what strikes me as pretty high for the 068 cam,...

unruhjonny,

Here is part of my confusion: That 345hp.
For 1969, 345hp meant a Firebird RA4.
For 1970, 345hp meant a Firebird RA3.
For 1970 RA3, Angeles-McCarthy's 1981 book says 744 cam, but McCarthy's 1989...

Sounds like a typical NHRA cheater cam from 1968-up (or maybe even before that?)

Do you think that cam was the one in the March 1964 Car & Driver "389" GTO vs Ferrari article?
Or did the cam &...

Wow thanks for all the quick replies, that answers that!
Indeed McCarthy pg 45 notes that even the 1969 RA3 dropped the 744 cam after engine 709185, so the 744 cam being gone for 1970 makes sense....

Was 1970 400-RamAir3 the 068 cam or 744 cam?

In learning all the complexities of Pontiac history I came across the specs in Angeles & McCarthy:
For 1970, the 400 RA3 is shown as ALL with 068 cam,...

I notice the dyno sheet says "corrected" but it doesnt say corrected to WHAT!

Talking 3 tube vs 4 tube dyno tests and can you measure lengths?

ARticles to look up and then maybe a favor:

Can you measure your primary tubes (1, 35, 7, 2, 46, 8) length?
Hedman doesnt give this and I wonder what they are
If you can post this I'd appreciate...

I tried the formula on the Wallace Racing site and got some wild answers, not in agreement with things that I know work.

Wink Exhaust Sizes

Dear Judges Dad,
I looked in Automotive Industries January 1970 pg 81, it says 2" pipes and 2.25 tailpipes was stock GTO.
The rules-of-thumb I use are:
2" is ok to about 280-320hp
2.25" is ok to...

Cool Manifolds=Investment Headers=Power

Jeff,
I voted for manifolds for YOUR car because:
a] It sounds like a pretty stock 389 tripower, at 350hp or so headers will gain you some (15 hp or so) but not much. In contrast, at 450-500hp...
