I'd skip step 5 on pesonal expeience. It sounds like your clean enough and wouldn't want to contaminate the metal with anything that might prevent the etch from being able to react.

Zap straps will work better than wire as they have a better surface area and are less likely to pull / tear through the material over time. You need to sharpen the tip on strap and they work great

The chrome shop said they had original patterns and would put it in spec if it needed it. I didn't ask if they did anything but I think they must have tweaked it.

Forget the hog rings. Use plastic zap straps. You can put them all on loose and pull them all up gradually with needle nose pliers a small amount at a time. It worked great for me.

Just be carefull when using the the strip caulk....

Just be carefull when using the the strip caulk. It is quite stiff, especially in cooler temps. Torque the bolts down very gently as the is not much give in the caulk - speaking from experience.
