Strange problem you got there. Perhaps you have a partial blockage in the supply to the pump so it is pulling a high vacuum on the upstroke that is failing the diaphragm? Just a suggestion.

Yes, he's a Ferrari driving surgeon with a weird obsession for oil, but a lot of what he says is correct. And water is used as a lubicant in many pumps, especially vertical ones.
