One good reason to do a fuel flow test by flowing a gallon of gas should be less than 30 seconds using the pump.

535461 - SD head

The SD head had bigger valves not sure if the intake port...

The wire you cut is probably the high resistance wire that lowers the voltage to 9 volts or so.

Should splice into the wire on the inside where it is 12 volts.

One other thing is the end of the balancer snout looks like it's galled. Could be from the rubber but could also be because the balancer needs to be tighten to specs. (150 lb/ft)

It needs volume also. If it can't flow 1 gallon of gas in 30 seconds, look for another pump.

Remember them, think someone I knew had a set. Did not work. Kept slipping when tried to 'grip' anything. Best set of 'channel locks' I had worked great. Were called water pump pliers....

Your pic looks like a full length tray. After some year (1970 maybe?) they went to a 3/4 length tray. (front 2 rod journals are not covered)

I think vibration is the culprit for the tray cracking....
