Allen,
I've been told that many of the serious drag racers ordered the bench seat to save weight. I've heard something in the range of 50 lbs between the bench and buckets. Although the standard transmission cars were considered to be quicker than the automatic cars back in those days, automatic cars generally produce more consistent quarter mile times. I believe that an automatic car would be a better choice for most racers if they were going to bracket race. If you look at the top ten fastest cars in the FAST series, you will see that most (if not all) of them are automatic cars. I suspect that with the technology avancements in auto transmissions and stall converters, the auto trans tends to be quicker choice these days.
