In highschool,(around 1979) i had a 70 lemans sport. i used to take it to the avilla indiana dragstrip during what was called the spring, summer, or fall nationals, (depending on the season).9.75 et in the 8th but thats not important. it was always hosted by a local radio station,(wmee 97.3......rock and roll, of course)and after it was over, people would stay and listen to music, dance, drink, smoke some............well you get the point!!!lol. anyway there was this cute redhead that was there during one of the events, (right around 1981 or so). i asked her out and she said no!!!(oh, i forgot to tell you that i was a major trouble maker in highschool and seems that my reputation with girls was not one of saintness!!lol).o.k. her loss, not mine right? i joined the navy the winter of 81 and got out the spring of 84....i had driven the car all over the country while in the service and decided to put a better motor in it. (would have went better if i had a job and some money before i started). now i have this car with no motor and no money to finish it, so i'm driving this piece of s@#t gremlin.......STOP LAUGHING!!!!and i run into this redhead again, and once again i'm shot down (don't cha hate it when that happens?). she said that she had heard from other girls that if she went out with me i would try to get some...you know. (its true, i was a DOG!!!)but i was like WWWAAAAAA, not me, anyway, we have been married for 20 years as of june 16 2005, two beautiful teenage girls (talk about payback.... damn boys are just like i was, sniffin around all the time). now back to the car. i never did anything with it, it sat in the garage for a few years and then i...i...i took it to the junkyard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!we were broke and we needed the money.($35.00)my wife was so upset because she never got to ride in it and i always told her that someday we would fix it up. now fast forward to 1997, i had came into a large sum of money and the kruse spring muscle car sale was about to happen. (you know, the auburn, cord and duesenburg thing in auburn indiana?) a couple of friends came up to the house that weekend to go to this event and when my wife found out that i was going she had a kiniption fit....do you know what that is??? you dont want to know!!! after a little persuading, she said i could go but her last words were, (as shes pointing her finger at me) "DON'T YOU DARE BUY A CAR" and i was like ok honey, i won't. we were there about an hour when we went into this place called the "car coral" walked around the corner and there it was....a red 1972 gto, a dream car that i always wanted...and the price was right!!! can you guess what happened next? i test drove the car with the owner to the bank, i wasnt sure i was going to buy it at first but on the way to the bank, i turned left onto the street that leads to the bank. as i made the turn, i got on it pretty hard and broke traction, went sideways and when it shifted, it barked the tires....i thought to myself...SOLD!!!!!he owned it when we left, i owned it when we got back. now i have to take it home....OMG!! what was i thinking, shes going to kill me!! (hard to imagine a 6 foot 225 lb. man afraid of a 4 ft. 11in. 100lb. woman) I pull in the driveway, go in the house and she's taking a nap on the couch. you must understand that wakeing my wife up is like that scene from the exorcist when linda blairs head goes all the way around!!! I said "honey, come outside for a sec, i want to show you something" she looked at me (i still shudder) and said "YOU BOUGHT A CAR DIDNT YOU" (quite a bit more vulgar than that) now she's following me through the house lecturing me about how i just couldnt wait to spend some of that money.....BLAH BLAH BLAH until we get to the back door and she sees it, she stopped talking in mid sentence, stands there staring for about 20 seconds starts to smile and says, "thats just like your ole black car isn't it?" I explained to her that it was a gto as she was putting on her shoes, and we went for a drive.....her smile kept getting bigger and bigger as we drove. on the way home, about 5 miles from the house, i stopped, got out and went aruond to the passenger side and let her drive it home. i couldnt get the smile off of her face with a body grinder. we finished the car together over the years and she is an expert on goats now, its turned out to be a good thing. she loves it when we go for a drive and people turn to look or give you the thumbs up or grab there buddies arm to turn them around so they wont miss it go by. for the older gentlemen out there......do you remember when.....am radio was all there was.....a&w rootbeer driveins....longhair and peace signs....bellbottom jeans....platform shoes, boy i sure do miss it sometimes, and when i do, i grab the wife, fire up the pontiac and go back in time................
