Exactly what lust4speed said. The car is obvoiusly on the back burner, not a daily driver. Pull the waterpump and timing chain cover, you can do that yourself, no need to pay your buddy. There's a good chance your problem is there from the symptoms. You'll feel much better about a complete tear down later if you find your leak first.
