I did something similar to what you are doing. I put a 71 timing cover w/ 11 bolt waterpump on a 68 pontiac 400 engine/heads. I used all the brackets/pulleys from the 71 engine, but I did have to deal with the fact that my 68 heads did not have a bolt hole that the 71 altenator pivot bolt screwed into.
