Just as a thought, although you probably would have found this by now...20 years ago, I had a similar problem on my first '68 GTO. In my haste to do a tuneup before a road trip, I pinched the condenser lead between the distributor cap and the distributor. Grounded the points so no fire.
In other words, just as the previous post reminds you to make sure that the system hasn't lost a ground connection, it's also important to make sure that no hot wire is grounded.
