Bob,
Your symptoms sound like the float is getting stuck all the way down, as in the empty position. If there is gas in the tank, see if you can unstick it by pushing up and down on the trunk area. It might work. The fact that the gauge works when you disconnect it leads me to this conclusion. If you have a multi meter, put it on the ohms scale, red lead on the tan wire (I presume) and black lead to ground, it should read somewhere around 0 ohms empty and 90 ohms when full. My guess is your is somewhere around zero due to a stuck float.
