The mixture control on an aircraft engine is there to compensate for altitude. Not really an issue on a car unless you drive up and down the Rockies all day. On the ground, mixture is generally set to full rich, and the mixture control is used to lean out the mixture as the airplane climbs.

They are air cooled, and thus require these items. They also operate over a very dynamic temperature range. Our Pontiacs are thermostatically controlled, water cooled engines, so if the cooling system is working correctly, it should operate over a very small temp range. The most labor intensive type engines I've ever operated were on high performance, turbocharged light twins.
