Ken,
I had a similar problem on ebay.

It was for a 4-inch forged steel crank. There was a reserve price on this item and the reserve had been met. There were at least 6 bids on it, I was the current high bidder with full intent to purchase.

The 7 day auction was on its last day and I was keeping a close eye on it. All of the sudden I could not find the auction and when I did find it, it stated that the seller had ended the auction early.
I emailed the guy asking what the hell was going on. He said that a local guy came to his house to look at some other items that he had for sale and that the guy wanted to buy everything on the condition that the crank was included.

I did not feel that this was right. I thought once the reserve was met on a "reserve price auction" that the transaction was a done deal.

I emailed ebay concerning this and they basically said that a seller can pull an auction for any reason at anytime.(tough cookies better luck next time)

Try doing something like this with your bidding, I am sure they would have a fit.
