FWIW, he could have also gotten a set of wheels that were off full size chevy's as they were optional in late 60's and early 70's.

Don't know how familiar you are with older Pontiacs, but if you have to change a tire on the left side of the car, REMEMBER, that you have to turn left to tighten and right to loosen. Should be a "L" in the end of the lug stud. You could break a stud if you tried to remove the lug nut the conventional way. Of course, someone may have changed them.
