Worn starters will do that. Make sure your cable connection from the engine back to the battery negative is as good as the positive side. Preferably run a cable back to the battery rather than using a frame ground.

A high torque reduction gear starter will certainly crank the engine, tho. Perhaps just bite the bullet & get the reduction gear starter since you may need to upgrade the starter anyway....
